How I Made My Sweat Social

One of the hardest things about staying healthy is maintaining a social life. After a long day, the idea of catching up with friends over drinks and dinner is a lot more appealing than hitting up that 6pm boot camp you signed up for. Being a New Yorker, there is nobody who understands this dilemma more than myself. I’d wake up and head to work with my gym bag in hand and a confirmation for the latest class on my email. Only by the time 3pm rolled around I was throwing back peanut M&M’s and accepting a Gchat invitation for mid-week appetizers. There is always something to celebrate. These nights start off fun, you blow off steam and catch up with friends and then you fall into the age-old routine. One drink turns into two, two turns into extra bread, bread turns into a less healthy entree choice and by night’s end there is that moment of self-loathing. “It wasn’t worth it”, you think to yourself “I should have just gone to the class”. This night lingers as you wake up bloated and now completely unmotivated to get to the gym.

Trust me, I get you.

Sick of breaking the commitment night after night I decided to do something about it.  To my surprise the answer was a lot easier than anticipated. When friends started inviting me out to dinner I would suggest including them in on my healthier alternatives. Soon, my booze-fest Wednesday nights were replaced with group Zumba or Spin class! We make healthy meals afterwards followed up by some cheesy television and just like that our night’s became more fulfilling. It does not have to be all or nothing. You could attend the class with a buddy and then head over to the festivities! Chances are your workout will leave you feeling better, granting you more willpower when it comes to resisting the molten chocolate cake being served up for dessert. The added bonus is when the occasional Thursday night dinner does pop up, it feels more singular because you’ve earned it! So the next time you have the option to pop a bottle of wine and scarf down brick oven pizza mid-week, think about the rewards reaped by blowing off some steam and transforming your night into your own healthy oasis! We are all fighting the same battle – let’s fight it together.
