THE 5 BEST TIPS FOR A NEW RUNNER
With the fall race season in full swing, many fitness enthusiasts are inspired to get their running shoes on. Whether you are training for a 5K or a marathon, these expert tips from Fitness Runs co-founder Nathaniel Oliver will help get you in fighting form for your big day.
GET THE CORRECT RUNNING SHOES
Having comfortable feet while you run is one of the most important parts of making running fun and sticking with it. Wearing the wrong shoes could actually bring on chronic issues down the road making your form suffer. Your best bet is to go to your local running shop and have them fit you with the perfect running shoes.
LEARN PROPER RUNNING FORM FROM AN EXPERT
With something as repetitive as running, you want to make sure that every step you take is the most efficient it can be. Bad running form will quickly lead to problems such as injuries and being more tired than normal because you’re not using your energy efficiently while running. Most important, you don’t want to be that crazy person that people look at and say “maybe they shouldn’t be running”! All jokes aside, to keep you running long and injury-free, proper form is a must. Even if you’ve been running for years and think you have good form you may be surprised when your form is looked at by a professional.
SWITCH UP YOUR RUNNING ROUTINE
Doing anything the same will quickly get you bored and unmotivated. Staring down at a screen on the treadmill watching tv will become extremely tiresome. The best part about running is you can take it outdoors where you have everything. One day run on the flat part in the park. The next day find some hills to run up, after that try some trail running. You can even mix up your speed – trying intervals one day then an easy few miles for your next run. The sky’s the limit on mixing your workouts outdoors. At Fitness Runs all our classes are outdoors. The outdoors will give so much variety, you can do the exact run one day and then try it again with the temperature 5 or 10 degrees colder and you get a completely different workout. It’s actually pretty amazing when you think about it.
DON’T RUN ALONE
Just like any exercise routine sometimes it’s hard to keep motivated. The weather may be cold or hot or you needed to sleep in one more hour. I always recommend to people to find a running buddy that you can be accountable to. Not only will you be more motivated knowing someone is waiting for you to go run, but it’s best to not run alone.
Now you may think that I’m going to say to shop for the best looking, trendiest running gear. Well maybe get the trendy stuff, but the key thing that I want to let you know is that it has to be comfortable on your body when you’re running. When you try on your running gear make sure everything fits the way it’s suppose to fit. It can be painful when your sneakers are not the right size or your sports bra/shirt is too loose or too tight. These little things are not such a problem when you’re doing a short distance run. However, when you start to run more than 20 minutes and these issues persist, they can distract you or even cause injury.
I hope I got you motivated to get outdoors and run. It’s marathon season here in NYC and now is the best time to start running.
